In 2011, WWE helped CM Punk explode on to the scene during the Summer. Dubbed "The Summer of Punk", CM Punk took off and became one of the faces of the company after defeating WWE Champion John Cena at the Money in the Bank Pay Per View. A month earlier, John Cena was closing out a feud with R-Truth.
R-Truth experienced his best year as a WWE superstar. He was a relatively popular superstar. The fans loved his dancing and singing his entrance theme "What's Up" written by Truth himself. Truth rode a wave of momentum to becoming the Number One Contender for the WWE Championship with John Cena. Truth put his contendership on the line against John Morrison and after losing the match, he viciously attacked Morrison. Truth a week later would degrade the fans, claiming that they had never done anything for him and popularity ain't win him any titles.
Truth would turn into a compelling heel with talks of conspiracy surrounding John Cena's popularity and Truth's lack of opportunities to become WWE Champion. Truth would go on to lose to Cena at Capital Punishment, which raised many questions. Questions that Robert Aitken from Bleacher Report asked for me in an article. (http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/826724-wwe-5-reasons-why-r-truths-wwe-conspiracy-theory-is-true)
Why hadn't truth been granted a rematch? Following his match with Cena, Truth continued to pick up heat teaming up with Miz to form Awesome Truth. Awesome Truth lasted 4 months in which they terrorized John Cena, CM Punk and WWE COO Triple H. Awesome Truth was then fed to John Cena and The Rock for Pay Per View buys and neither was able to return to the main event scene since. (Miz had a one off match in the WWE Championship Money in the Bank Ladder match at MITB 2013). Truth was then suspended and returned as a babyface, a roll he has held on to ever since.
Truth was praised by many for his short run as a heel. Bleacher Reporter writer Will J. Baker summed Truth's role as a heel perfectly: "R-Truth is very convincing at portraying a demented and psychopathic man desperate to overcome a non-existent "conspiracy" against him". Truth became one of my favorite guys to watch. He was ridiculous in his promos, believing that someone was out to get him. He also became more violent and unpredictable which made him more compelling because there was no way to predict what Truth would do next. Had he taken the title from Cena, we may have had a Summer of R-Truth instead. I guess we'll never know.
