EOTR Previews: WWE Survivor Series 2016

By @TrueGodImmortal

The 30th Anniversary of Survivor Series is upon us. With little fanfare about the anniversary and a lack of big names for the event returning, you'd be forgiven if you didn't realize it's been 30 years. Regardless, this year we have a team that's mostly RAW vs Smackdown. It's a bit overkill, but it works in a way. With three Survivor Series Elimination matches on deck, and the in ring return of Goldberg, as well as possible appearances from The Undertaker and more, one has to wonder what this event will turn out to be remembered as. Time will tell, but let's take a look at the card.

*WWE Cruiserweight Title Match  (If Kalisto wins, the Cruiserweight Division goes to Smackdown)
The Brian Kendrick vs Kalisto

-This match baffles me a bit. Sure, the Cruiserweight Division should go to Smackdown, but Kalisto as champion? Eh. However, the division coming to Smackdown could change the whole landscape of the division. Still, I don't see any chance of Kalisto winning the title and I feel the division will stay on RAW. Kendrick retains in a match that will be decent, but likely disappoint in a way. Kendrick defeats Kalisto and the Cruiserweights remain on RAW.... but also kill it on 205 Live.

*RAW vs Smackdown 5 on 5 Women's Match
(Sasha Banks, Charlotte, Bayley, Alicia Fox, and Nia Jax vs Becky Lynch, Nikki Bella, Naomi, Carmella, Alexa Bliss)

-This match has some potential to be very good. Sasha and Charlotte are the two best women in the division for RAW and the biggest names and that's why they get featured more (the idiots crying about them feuding for two or three months have no valid argument), but Smackdown has their women on mostly equal footing, which is making this match interesting. Becky and Alexa are killing it, along with the other women on the show, but I suspect RAW wins this contest. RAW has two of the greatest women in WWE history on their team and I suspect we see Sasha and Charlotte as the final remain two, or in a twist, Sasha actually is the final Survivor for team RAW before her rematch against Charlotte to win back the women's title. If Smackdown wins, I'm fine with it, but I have to go with RAW here.

*WWE Intercontinental Championship Match
The Miz vs Sami Zayn

-So..... we were all set to have Ziggler vs Zayn in a great match that had potential to be a classic.... AND instead we get this?? This? Really? Why? The Miz needs to move on from this title and while I don't mind his work this year, I do have to say no one wanted to see this match and all I can do is hope Zayn wins this match. Zayn has been floundering around and it seems the best thing for him is to win the IC Title and head to Smackdown... and give us that feud we all want with Ziggler. Why the WWE chose to screw the fans and take away the biggest match of the night candidate is beyond me, but it's typical WWE. This match will be good, and I can only hope Zayn walks away with the victory and the IC Title and decides to sign with Smackdown and change the landscape of the show.

*10 on 10 RAW vs Smackdown Tag Teams Elimination Match
(The New Day, Sheamus & Cesaro, The Shining Stars, Gallows & Anderson, Enzo & Cass vs Heath Slater & Rhyno, American Alpha, The Usos, The Hype Bros, Tyler Breeze & Fandango)

-This match is a strange one. I have no concern here for either side. The New Day is my favorite team and Enzo & Cass are right behind them, but if I'm being honest, this match looks so boring on paper. I'd expect this match to come down to New Day and American Alpha, with American Alpha managing to pick up the victory for Smackdown, getting them in line for a possible tag team title shot and rebooting their momentum. RAW has a big shot of winning with their two most popular teams on their squad, but I feel like Smackdown will come out of this looking like the victors at the end.

*Brock Lesnar vs Goldberg

-The mega rematch.... that no one wanted to see. At all. Why is this happening? Nostalgia. Wouldn't it have been smarter to have another match for Goldberg? One with a stronger opponent who can actually put in effort and carry the match? No? Of course not. The WWE logic is glowing. This match is based on the WWE 2K17 video game and Goldberg being a playable character, and they've used this to make it a "Fantasy Warfare Becomes Real" thing, but let's be honest: WE SAW THIS ALREADY AND IT SUCKED.... 12 YEARS AGO! WHERE IS THIS FANTASY WARFARE? The logic behind this booking is shitty and the WWE runs the risk of ruining their event with this match as a focal point. Goldberg is in no shape to wrestle and he will get winded very quickly. Brock doesn't give a shit and this match will be a piece of cake for him. This match is a joke. It's been fun to see Goldberg back, but I wish he would have had someone who could carry him to a decent match instead of him going in there at 49 years old with the lazy Lesnar. Brock wins this match obviously and I hope we see Samoa Joe debut soon after to start up a rivalry for Mania 33. We can only hope.

*5 on 5 RAW vs Smackdown Elimination Main Event
(Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, Braun Strowman, Chris Jericho, and Roman Reigns vs Bray Wyatt, AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Shane McMahon, and Randy Orton)

-This match is the most exciting yet most confusing in the same respect. Bray vs Braun is slightly intriguing. Orton vs Owens is as well. The concept of Ambrose vs Rollins or Reigns is cool as always, and Jericho vs Shane would be a cool moment to observe, however, the two match ups that everyone wants to see really? Owens vs Styles on a smaller level, and Styles vs Rollins on a larger level. Shane being in the match is strange and with Taker coming back, him replacing Shane would have made this match MUCH better by design. Still, WWE has a chance to make a classic and if this comes down to AJ vs Seth as the last two, I expect something amazing to occur. I'll lean towards Smackdown to win, but if RAW pulls out a victory, I wouldn't be surprised. However, the balance of booking should tilt this in Smackdown's favor.

This event could disappoint like many of the previous Survivor Series events, but my hope is that it doesn't. However, we could be looking at an abomination aside from one or two matches, but there's a weird aura around this event that could go either way. I guess we will find out this Sunday.

-True
