Today, I wanted to talk I'm going to skip the long winded introduction about versatility and all that other stuff. You guys should know me by now and if not, I'm a fan of versatile wrestlers who can succeed across the card.
The formation began after WrestleMania X-7 with the shocking finish that saw Stone Cold turn heel and join forces with Vince McMahon. The following night Triple H confronted Vince about the events of the night before, and Vince replied calling Austin a winner and Triple H a loser. Later that night, Stone Cold defended the WWE Championship inside a Steel Cage against The Rock but Triple H entered the cage and attacked The Rock with his sledgehammer. In the following weeks, Austin and Hunter would go around attacking stars such as Undertaker, Kane and the Hardys.
On the Smackdown following WrestleMania, Stone Cold attacked his longtime friend Jim Ross who Vince fired after JR voiced his displeasure with the new tandem. Triple H would later that night defeat Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Championship with help from Austin. After their subsequent attacks on the Brothers of Destruction, Kane and Undertaker decided to strike back, stopping Austin and Hunter from attacking the Hardys. The Brothers of Destruction put their Tag Team Titles on the line against The Power Trip at Backlash with the WWE Championship and Intercontinental Championship also on the line. The Power Trip would win after Triple H hit Kane with a sledgehammer, securing all major male titles in the WWE.
The next night, Austin and Triple H attacked Kane and injured his elbow. On Smackdown, it was announced Taker would receive a WWE Title shot at Judgement and he finished the night attacking The Power Trip, throwing Austin through a glass window. At Insurrextion, Taker defeated The Power Trip in a handicap match for the WWE Championship but the title didn't change hands as Taker pinned Triple H. Taker would continue to feud with the Power Trip and Rikishi, who was injected into the alliance, until the return of his brother Kane, who challenged Triple H to a chain match for the Intercontinental Championship. Austin cost Triple H the match and his title by accidentally hitting him with a steel chair but Triple H let it go and helped Austin retain the WWE Championship in the main event.
The Two Man Power Trip would come to an end the following night on Raw as Triple H blew out his quadriceps muscle in his left knee while defending the Tag Team Titles with Austin against Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit. As a result, Benoit and Jericho won the titles and on Smackdown, Austin berated Hunter by calling him the weakest link and effectively ending the alliance.
What's disappointing is this team of all time greats were torn apart before they even took off. Due to Trips' Quad injury, he missed the entire Invasion angle but one does wonder what would have happened if The Power Trip were still together through this war. The team only lasted a month, but it was a very entertaining month of unrelenting brutality including Austin abusing Lita with a chair, which would be unheard of in today's climate. With Vince in their back pocket they could have continued to throw their weight around and hoard all of the gold in the company with no one standing a chance of stopping them. This was like if Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant joined forces in the 2012 season (only because I think The Rock was LeBron that year). With the way the roster is set up now, one can only wonder if we'll ever get something like this again. The closest we've come is JeriKO and they aren't even close to the TTMPT.
